EHCPs

An Education, Health and Care Plan (EHCP) is a crucial legal document tailored for an individual child or young person within the age range of 0-25 years, specifically designed for those with special educational needs and disabilities (SEND).

This comprehensive plan outlines a detailed description of their educational, health, and social care requirements, along with the necessary provisions that must be put in place to support them in reaching significant life goals.

Moreover, it incorporates insights into the child or young person’s ambitions, and for individuals aged Year 9 or above, it includes details concerning their transition into adulthood. EHCPs undergo a thorough review every twelve months, with additional six-monthly evaluations for children below statutory school age.

If you believe your child would benefit from an EHCP, you have the right to request an assessment from your local authority.

A young person can request an assessment themselves if they’re aged 16 to 25.

A request can also be made by anyone else who thinks an assessment may be necessary, including doctors, health visitors, teachers, parents and family friends - IT DOESN’T HAVE TO BE A TEACHER!

If they decide to carry out an assessment you may be asked for:

  • any reports from your child’s school, nursery or childminder

  • doctors’ assessments of your child

  • a letter from you about your child’s needs

The local authority will tell you within 16 weeks whether an EHC plan is going to be made for your child.
